The short answer
To jump start a car safely, clamp red to the flat battery's positive, red to the donor's positive, black to the donor's negative, and the last black clamp to bare metal on the stalled car's engine, away from the battery. Start the donor, then the stalled car, and remove the leads in reverse order. Arjan Battery runs a 24-hour jump start service in Arjan, Dubai.

Before you connect anything
A jump start borrows current from a healthy 12V source to turn your engine. Done in the right order it is safe. Done wrong it can spark beside the battery or damage control units that are far harder to put right than a flat battery. Check that both cars are 12V, switch both ignitions off, and set both in Park with the handbrake on.
Look at the flat battery first. If the case is swollen, cracked or leaking, or you smell sulphur, stop and do not jump it. Use leads with thick cable and clean clamps, since thin leads get hot and may not carry enough current for a large SUV engine. Keep the two cars from touching each other.
Jump starting with leads and a second car
The order is red, red, black, earth. Removal is the same sequence backwards.
- 1
Park close and switch everything off
Bring the donor car near enough for the leads to reach without stretching. Ignition, lights, AC and audio off in both cars.
- 2
Red to the flat battery
Clamp one red lead to the positive (+) terminal, or the positive jump post, of the car that will not start.
- 3
Red to the donor
Clamp the other red end to the donor battery's positive terminal.
- 4
Black to the donor
Clamp one black lead to the donor battery's negative (-) terminal.
- 5
Black to bare metal
Clamp the last black end to an unpainted metal point on the stalled car's engine, or its marked earth post, well away from the battery.
- 6
Run the donor, then crank
Let the donor idle for 2 to 3 minutes. Then crank the stalled car for a few seconds. If it does not fire, wait a minute and try again.
- 7
Remove in reverse
Black from the earth point, black from the donor, red from the donor, red from the car that was flat. Do not let the clamps touch.
- 8
Keep it running
Drive for at least 30 minutes without stopping the engine, then have the battery tested.
The last clamp never goes on the flat battery
The final connection can spark, and a battery under charge gives off hydrogen. Make that connection on bare engine metal or the car's earth post. On cars with a battery sensor on the negative terminal, clamping there also bypasses the sensor, so the car miscounts the charge going in.
Jump starting with a booster pack
- 1
Check the pack
It must be charged and rated for your engine. Diesels and large V8s need a far bigger pack than a small petrol hatchback.
- 2
Red on, pack switched off
With the pack off, clamp red to the positive terminal or positive jump post.
- 3
Black to the earth point
Clamp black to the earth post or bare engine metal, unless the pack's own instructions say otherwise.
- 4
Switch on and read the lights
Wait for the ready light. A reverse-polarity warning means the clamps are the wrong way round: disconnect and start again.
- 5
Crank in short bursts
A few seconds at a time, with a pause between tries so the pack and the starter can cool.
- 6
Switch off, then unclamp
Pack off first, then black, then red. Recharge the pack when you get home.
Modern cars: find the jump posts
Many European cars carry the battery in the boot or under a seat. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche and Range Rover models usually provide jump posts under the bonnet instead: a positive post under a red plastic cap marked with a plus sign, and an earth stud or marked bolt nearby. Use these and leave the battery itself alone. The owner's manual shows where they are.
Hybrids and EVs have a low-voltage battery that goes flat like any other, and most can be jump started through the posts shown in the manual. Never touch the orange high-voltage cables. Many makers also advise against using a hybrid or EV as the donor. Newer Teslas with a 16V lithium battery follow a different procedure, so read the manual or message us first.
What not to do
- Do not let a red clamp touch a black clamp, or any metal, once the other end is connected.
- Do not jump a battery that is swollen, cracked, leaking or smells of sulphur.
- Do not use a 24V truck to jump a 12V car.
- Do not rev the donor engine hard. A steady fast idle is enough.
- Do not lean over the battery, smoke or use a lighter while making the last connection.
- Do not crank for long stretches. The starter motor and the leads overheat.
- Do not switch the engine off straight after the jump, before the alternator has put some charge back.
When a jump start will not work
If two careful attempts fail, stop. More cranking only heats the leads and the starter.
- A dead cell or internal short: the car starts on the leads and dies the moment they come off.
- A failed alternator: the car starts, the battery light stays on and the engine stalls some minutes later.
- A faulty starter motor: bright lights, one click and no cranking even with the leads on.
- Corroded or loose battery terminals that cannot pass cranking current.
- A fault that is not electrical: the engine cranks at normal speed but never fires.
- A battery left flat for weeks, which often will not recover and needs replacing.
How to Jump Start a Car Safely: Step by Step: common questions
Not answered here? Ask on WhatsApp. A person replies, at any hour.
What is the correct order to connect jump leads?
Red to the positive of the flat battery, red to the positive of the donor, black to the negative of the donor, and the last black to bare metal on the stalled car's engine. Disconnect in exactly the opposite order once the engine is running.
Can jump starting damage my car's computer?
A correct jump start is safe. Damage comes from reversed clamps, clamps touching each other, or a 24V donor. Keeping the ignitions off while you connect, and using the car's jump posts where it has them, removes most of the risk. If you are unsure, a jump start service is the safer route.
How long should I drive after a jump start?
At least 30 minutes at steady speed, and longer is better. An alternator is designed to maintain a battery, not to refill a flat one, so a deeply discharged battery may need a proper charger. If the car needs a second jump the next morning, have the battery tested.
Can I jump start a car that has start-stop or an AGM battery?
Yes, with the same clamp order. Use the jump posts under the bonnet and the earth point the maker provides, not the negative terminal, so the battery sensor still measures the charge. An AGM battery that has been fully flat should be tested afterwards.
Why won't my car start even with jump leads connected?
Check the clamps are biting on clean metal and give the donor a few more minutes. If the engine still will not turn, the cause is likely a failed cell in the battery, corroded terminals or the starter motor. If it cranks normally and does not fire, the fault is not the battery.
