The short answer

A dying car battery usually shows itself through a slow, laboured crank, a clicking sound when you press the start button, dim lights at idle, a battery warning light, a swollen case, or start-stop that switches itself off. In Dubai heat, any battery past 2 years with one of these signs should be tested. Arjan Battery offers battery testing and replacement at your door in Arjan.

A battery rarely fails all at once

Most batteries give some notice. The trouble is that the early signs are easy to explain away: the engine took half a second longer to fire, start-stop has not cut in for a week, the cabin light dipped when you pressed the start button. Each of these means the battery can no longer hold its voltage under load.

In the UAE the warning period is shorter than in cooler countries. Heat damages the plates steadily through the summer, and a battery that cranked slowly on Monday can be flat by Thursday. If your battery is more than 2 years old and shows any sign in the table below, have it tested before the next long stop.

The seven signs, what each means and what to do

What it usually meansWhat to do
Slow, laboured crankThe battery cannot deliver enough cranking current. It is low on charge or its plates are worn.Book a battery test this week and avoid short trips until then.
Rapid clicking, no crankVoltage collapses as the starter engages, so the solenoid chatters in and out.Stop trying. Call a jump start service, then have the battery tested.
Dim or flickering lights at idleA low battery, or an alternator that is not keeping up with the load.Have both the battery and the charging voltage tested.
Battery warning light while drivingA charging fault. More often the alternator or its belt than the battery itself.Switch off loads you can spare, stop somewhere safe and get the charging system checked.
Swollen or bulging caseOverheating or overcharging has deformed the case.Do not jump start or charge it. Replace the battery.
Start-stop switches itself offThe battery sensor sees low charge or poor state of health and keeps the engine running to protect the next start.Test the battery. An EFB or AGM battery near the end of its life often shows this first.
Age past 2 to 3 yearsNormal heat wear for the UAE, even with no other symptom.Test before each summer and before any long trip.

A swollen battery or a rotten-egg smell is not a jump-start job

A bulging case, wet acid marks around the top or a sulphur smell mean the battery has overheated or is being overcharged. Do not connect jump leads or a charger to it. Leave the bonnet open in a ventilated spot, keep sparks and flames away, and have the battery replaced and the charging voltage checked.

What to do when you notice a sign

  1. 1

    Note when it happens

First start of the day, after a run of short trips, or after the car has stood for a weekend. The pattern tells the technician where to look.

  2. 2

    Look at the terminals

White or green crust, or a clamp you can twist by hand, causes the same symptoms as a weak battery. Do not touch the crust with bare skin.

  3. 3

    Check the battery's age

Find the date code on the label or the fitting date on your last invoice. Past 2 years in the UAE, a symptom is rarely a coincidence.

  4. 4

    Get a full test

A proper test covers resting voltage, cranking performance and alternator output. Voltage alone can look fine on a battery that has lost its cranking power.

  5. 5

    Act on the result

Healthy but low: recharge it with a longer drive or a charger. Poor state of health: replace it. Charging fault: fix that first, or the new battery will fail too.

Readings that confirm the signs

Rested, about 12.6V
Fully charged
Rested, about 12.2V
Half charged
Rested, under 12.0V
Discharged
While cranking
Usually stays above about 9.6V on a healthy battery
Engine running
Roughly 13.8 to 14.7V

Measure resting voltage after the car has stood for a few hours. A reading taken straight after a drive is flattered by surface charge.

Signs that point somewhere else

  • The engine cranks at normal speed but does not fire: look at fuel or ignition, not the battery.
  • One loud click with bright headlights: usually the starter motor or its solenoid.
  • Battery light on with a squeal from the engine bay: a slipping alternator belt.
  • A nearly new battery flat again after two days of standing: a parasitic drain somewhere in the car.
  • A key-not-detected message with normal cabin lights: the coin cell in the key fob.

Words the technician may use

State of health
How much of its original capacity and cranking power the battery still has, whatever its current charge level.
Cold-cranking amps (CCA)
The starting current printed on the label. The tester compares what the battery delivers now with that figure.
Surface charge
A thin layer of extra voltage left on the plates after driving or charging. It fades within hours.
Parasitic drain
Current drawn from the battery while the car is locked and switched off.

7 Signs Your Car Battery Is Dying: common questions

Not answered here? Ask on WhatsApp. A person replies, at any hour.

Can a car battery die without any warning signs?

Yes, and it is common in the UAE. A warm engine starts easily, which hides the loss of cranking power until the first harder start. An internal fault such as a failed cell can also end a battery overnight. A test before each summer is the only reliable early warning.

Why does my car click but not start?

Rapid clicking means the battery has enough voltage to pull the starter solenoid in but not enough current to turn the engine, so the solenoid drops out and tries again. A jump start usually gets the car going. One single click with bright lights points to the starter motor.

Does the battery light mean I need a new battery?

Not usually. The light reports a charging fault, so the first suspects are the alternator, its drive belt and the wiring between them. The battery may still be good but is no longer being recharged. Have the charging voltage tested before buying anything.

My start-stop has stopped working. Is the battery failing?

Often, yes. The car disables start-stop when the battery sensor reports low charge or poor state of health. Very hot days and heavy AC use can also pause it on a good battery, so a single day means little. If it has been off for a week or more, test the start-stop battery.

How long can I keep driving on a weak battery?

There is no safe number. A weak battery may last weeks in daily use and then fail after one night parked. Once the car is running the alternator carries the load, so the risk is at the next start. Test it now and replace it on your own terms.

What drivers around Arjan say

  • HassanArjan, Nissan Patrol

The Patrol would not start in the tower basement before work. The technician found the bay from the pin and level number I sent, tested the old battery and showed me the reading before changing it. He took the old one away with him.

    Battery replacement

  • JamesMotor City, Volkswagen Tiguan
My Tiguan has start-stop, so I asked if it needed an AGM battery. He checked the one fitted, confirmed it was AGM and fitted the same type, then coded it with a scan tool. Clear explanation of what he was doing at each step.

  • LaylaJVC, Kia Sportage

I thought the battery was finished because the car was slow to start. He tested the battery and the alternator and said the battery still had life in it and only needed a proper charge. He did not try to sell me a new one.

I left the interior light on overnight. I sent my location on WhatsApp early in the morning and the car was running again before I had to leave for work. He told me to drive it for a while so the battery could recharge.

The car would not start in the office car park at lunchtime. He replaced the battery while I went back to my desk and sent me a photo of the charging reading when he was done. The invoice has the warranty period written on it.

My car did not start after my night shift. The technician jump-started it and tested the battery. He said it was weak and would probably need changing soon, but he left the decision to me.
