Why skipping the coding costs you a battery
An Audi tracks its battery through a sensor on the negative terminal. Over the years the car learns that the battery is ageing and adjusts: it changes the charging voltage, switches start-stop off and sheds comfort loads to protect starting. Fit a new battery without coding and the car keeps treating it as the worn one. Charging stays wrong for a fresh AGM and its life is shortened.
This is why an Audi battery replacement done in a car park with no scan tool often looks fine for a month, then start-stop stops working and a low battery message appears on the driver display. - Battery energy management. The system, and the code printed on Audi batteries, that the car uses to know which battery is fitted.
- AGM
- Absorbent glass mat. A sealed battery that tolerates deep cycling and fast charging from brake energy recovery.
- Recuperation
- The alternator charges hardest while you brake or coast, then eases off under acceleration. It needs a battery that accepts charge quickly.
- 48V mild hybrid
- A second electrical system on newer large Audis, with its own lithium battery. It does not replace the 12V battery.
Jump starting an Audi with a boot battery
Do not clamp jump leads onto the battery in the boot or under the seat. Audi provides a positive post under a red cover and an earth point under the bonnet for this. Using them keeps sparks away from the battery and protects the sensor on the negative terminal.
How an Audi tells you the battery is weak
- Start-stop no longer shuts the engine off at signals, even on a cool evening.
- A low battery charge message appears on the driver display after short trips.
- The MMI screen switches itself off sooner than usual when you sit with the engine off.

Audi: Model by model
- Audi A3
- One of the few Audis with the battery under the bonnet. Most take an EFB or AGM of about 60 to 70Ah, and it still needs coding after replacement.
- Audi A4
- On most generations the battery is under the boot floor beside the spare wheel well. Usual fitment is an AGM of 70 to 80Ah; jump posts are under the bonnet.
- Audi A6
- Boot-mounted AGM of roughly 80 to 95Ah. The latest generation adds a 48V mild-hybrid system with its own lithium battery, which is separate from the 12V battery we replace.
- Audi A8
- The flagship carries the largest battery in the range, often 95 to 105Ah AGM in the boot, to feed air suspension, soft-close doors and rear seat electronics.
- Audi Q3
- Battery under the bonnet, usually an AGM or EFB of around 70Ah. Access is easier than on the bigger cars, but the coding step is identical.
- Audi Q5
- Usually under the boot floor, an AGM of 70 to 95Ah depending on engine. The floor panel and a foam tool tray lift out to reach it.

- Audi e-tron
- The electric SUV still has a 12V AGM battery for its computers, locks and contactors. If the car is dead with a charged high-voltage pack, that 12V battery is the first thing to test.

Does an Audi battery need coding after replacement?
Yes, on practically every Audi with energy management, which covers most cars from the mid-2000s onward. The new battery's capacity, type and serial data are written to the car with a scan tool. Without it the charging strategy stays set for the old battery and the new one ages faster.
Where is the battery on an Audi Q7?
On most Q7s it is inside the cabin, under a front seat, beneath floor covers. The seat is moved to reach it. There are jump start points under the bonnet, so a flat Q7 can be started without lifting anything inside. We confirm your model year before coming.
Can I replace an Audi AGM battery with an ordinary one?
No. A car built with AGM charges at rates an ordinary flooded battery cannot take, and a flooded battery inside the boot or cabin is not what the car was designed around. AGM battery replacement must be AGM again, with the same or closely matching capacity.
My Audi has a 48V mild hybrid. Which battery do you replace?
The 12V AGM battery. It still powers the computers, lights and locks, and it is the one that fails from heat and short trips. The 48V lithium battery is a separate dealer-level component. If our tests point to the 48V side, we tell you and do not sell you a 12V battery.
