Most modern Mercedes-Benz models in Dubai take a DIN-size AGM main battery of about 70 to 95Ah, and many also carry a small auxiliary battery for the start-stop and gear selector systems. A Mercedes usually has two batteries
The main AGM battery starts the engine and runs the car. The second one is much smaller. On most models it is an auxiliary battery, and on some a voltage converter does the same job. It keeps the electronics steady while the engine restarts at traffic lights and gives the electronic gear selector enough power to reach Park if the main battery fails.
The message 'Auxiliary Battery Malfunction' on the instrument cluster refers to the small one. The car still drives, but start-stop switches itself off and the message stays. It is a separate part in a separate place, so tell us if you have seen that message. We check which unit your car uses before setting off and test both batteries when we arrive.
Mercedes battery words, explained
- AGM
- Absorbent glass mat. A sealed battery that copes with start-stop and heavy electrical loads. A Mercedes built with AGM must get AGM again.
- H6, H7, H8
- European case lengths, roughly 70Ah, 80Ah and 95Ah in AGM. The tray and clamp are made for one of them.
- Auxiliary battery
- A small second battery that supports start-stop and the electronic gear selector. It has its own warning message.
- ECO start/stop
- The Mercedes name for switching the engine off at a standstill. It stops working when either battery is weak.
- Battery registration
- Telling the car's energy management that a new battery is fitted, so it charges it as new and not as an aged one.
- 48V system
- A mild-hybrid system on some newer engines with its own 48V battery. It is separate from the 12V battery we replace.

Resting voltage, cranking strength and alternator output are measured, and the auxiliary battery is checked if your car has one.

Covers, a cabin filter housing or a seat-floor panel come off, depending on where your model keeps it. Trim is put back the way it was.

A memory saver holds the settings where the car allows it. The new battery matches the original capacity, and the vent hose and clamp are refitted.

Register and recheck
Where the car needs it, the battery is registered with a scan tool. Charging voltage is measured again and the old battery leaves with us for recycling.
Jump start from the bonnet posts, not from the battery in the cabin or boot
Mercedes provides jump points in the engine bay for a reason. On models with the battery under a seat or in the boot, the leads belong on the positive post and earth stud under the bonnet. Reversing them, even for a second, can damage control units. If you are not sure which post is which, wait for the technician.

Mercedes-Benz: Model by model
- Mercedes-Benz C-Class
- The main AGM battery, usually 70 to 80Ah, sits under the bonnet near the windscreen. Recent generations add a small auxiliary battery or a voltage converter for start-stop.
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class
- Usually an 80 to 95Ah AGM main battery, under the bonnet on recent generations and in the boot on some older ones. The auxiliary battery moved between generations, so we confirm by year.
- Mercedes-Benz S-Class
- The main battery is usually a 95Ah-class AGM in the boot, and many cars carry a second battery. Soft-close doors and air suspension make a weak battery obvious early.
- Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class
- On many versions the main AGM battery, about 95Ah, is under the front passenger seat, so the seat is moved back and a floor panel lifted. Newer mild-hybrid engines add a separate 48V system.
- Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class
- Laid out like the C-Class: an AGM main battery of about 70 to 80Ah under the bonnet near the windscreen, with start-stop support alongside.
- Mercedes-Benz G-Class
- On the long-running older shape the main battery is under the cabin floor, not under the bonnet. Position differs on the current shape, so send the year and we confirm.
- Mercedes-Benz A-Class
- A 70Ah-class AGM battery under the bonnet on most versions. Short city trips with start-stop active are hard on it, and the car disables start-stop as the battery weakens.
- Mercedes-Benz M-Class
- From the 2006 shape onwards the main battery is under the front passenger seat, usually a 95Ah-class AGM. A small auxiliary battery is fitted on many cars.

What does Auxiliary Battery Malfunction mean on my Mercedes?
It means the small second battery, or the voltage converter that replaces it on some models, is no longer holding charge. The car remains driveable, but start-stop is switched off and the message stays on. It is not the main starter battery. We check which part your model uses and test both.
Does a Mercedes battery need registration after replacement?
On most modern Mercedes models it is recommended. The energy management system tracks the battery's age, and registering the new one with a scan tool lets the car charge it correctly and bring start-stop back. We do this at your car in Arjan or elsewhere in Dubai as part of the fitting.
Can I fit a normal battery in a Mercedes instead of AGM?
No, not if the car came with AGM. A flooded battery cannot handle the repeated restarts and the charging profile of a start-stop Mercedes, and when the battery sits in the cabin or boot a sealed AGM is also the safe choice. An AGM battery replacement keeps the system working as designed.
Where is the battery on a Mercedes GLE or ML?
On most ML and many GLE models the main battery is under the front passenger seat, beneath a floor panel. The seat is moved fully back to reach it. Jump start posts are under the bonnet, so the car can still be started or tested without opening the floor.
My Mercedes says 'Stop vehicle, leave engine running'. Is that the battery?
