On a Fiat a weak battery does not always announce itself as a slow start. The electric power steering needs a steady supply and can show its warning light when voltage sags during cranking. Cars with the Dualogic automated gearbox rely on an electric pump and may refuse to select a gear or show a gearbox warning on a low battery.

What battery does a Fiat 500 take?

Why does my Fiat 500 show a steering or gearbox warning when starting?
Often because battery voltage drops too far while the starter is turning. The electric steering and the Dualogic gearbox both react to low voltage. A battery test is the first check. If the battery is healthy, the fault lies elsewhere and needs a scan.
Does a Fiat need battery registration?
