Two batteries, two jobs
When a start-stop Volvo restarts its engine at a signal, the starter pulls enough current to dip the voltage across the whole car. Screens would flicker and the audio would cut. To prevent that, Volvo adds a small support battery that holds the electronics steady for those few seconds while the main battery does the cranking.
The support battery is small, sits in engine-bay heat and is cycled at every stop, so in Dubai it often wears out before the main one. The car notices and shows a start-stop service message. It is then easy to replace the large main battery when the small one was the fault. Testing both batteries first costs minutes and avoids that.

- The large starter battery. It cranks the engine and carries the car's loads when the engine is off.
- Support battery
- A small second 12V battery that keeps voltage stable during automatic restarts. It cannot start the car alone.
- Battery monitoring sensor
- A module on the main battery's negative terminal that tracks charge and ageing. It should be reset when a new battery goes in.
- B5 and B6 mild hybrid
- Newer engines with a 48V battery and starter-generator. On these, the 48V unit takes over the support battery's role.

If your Volvo shows a start-stop message but still cranks strongly, do not assume the main battery is finished. We test the main and the support battery separately and show you both readings. Often only the small one needs replacing, which is a shorter job.

- Volvo XC90
- On most XC90s the main battery is under the boot floor, an AGM of 80 to 95Ah on recent cars. Petrol start-stop versions add a support battery under the bonnet. We confirm from the VIN.
- Volvo XC60
- The Volvo we see most. Main AGM of 70 to 80Ah in the boot on most cars, with a support battery up front on start-stop versions. The start-stop message on this model is very often the support battery.
- Volvo XC40
- Different layout from its bigger siblings: the main battery is under the bonnet, near the windscreen, under a plastic cover. Usually an AGM of about 70Ah.
- Volvo S60
- Boot-mounted main battery on most generations, AGM of 70 to 80Ah on start-stop cars. The boot floor lifts out for access, and jump points are under the bonnet.
- Volvo S90
- Shares its electrical layout with the XC90: main AGM battery at the rear, support battery or 48V mild-hybrid unit depending on year. Newer B5 and B6 engines are the mild hybrids.
- Volvo V40
- The hatchback keeps its main battery under the bonnet. Start-stop versions have a support battery nearby, and an ageing one produces the same start-stop message as on larger Volvos.
- Volvo EX30
- Electric, with a small 12V battery that runs the screen, locks and contactors. If the car will not wake up despite a charged drive battery, the 12V battery is the first check.

What does Start/Stop Service Required mean on a Volvo XC60?
The car has decided it cannot rely on automatic restarts. On the XC60 the usual cause is an aged support battery in the engine bay, and sometimes the main battery. The car remains safe to drive. A test of both batteries at your location shows which one to replace.
Where is the battery on a Volvo XC90?
On most XC90s the main battery is at the back, under the boot floor. Start-stop petrol versions also have a small support battery under the bonnet. For a jump start, use the charging points under the bonnet. We check your model year before coming, since layouts changed.
Does a Volvo need the battery registered after replacement?
It is recommended. Volvos with a battery monitoring sensor keep a record of the old battery's ageing. Resetting it with a scan tool lets the car charge the new battery correctly and brings start-stop back sooner. We do the reset at the car as part of the job.
Can you replace a Volvo support battery at my home in Dubai?
