The short answer
Subaru cars take a Japanese JIS battery, most often a D23L case of about 50 to 70Ah, mounted in the open at a front corner of the engine bay. Newer models with Auto Start Stop need an idle-stop EFB or AGM. Arjan Battery tests the battery and alternator, then fits the right one at your door in Arjan and across Dubai, 24 hours a day.
The flat boxer engine sits low and leaves the battery easy to reach, so a Subaru is one of the quicker cars to work on. The decisions are about the part: which JIS case, and an idle-stop battery instead of an ordinary one if your Forester or XV is new enough to have Auto Start Stop.

Reading the code on a Subaru battery
A Subaru battery label reads something like 55D23L. The first number is a performance rating, not amp-hours. D is the case width and height class, 23 is the length in centimetres, and L gives the terminal layout. A 75D23L fits the same tray as a 55D23L and simply gives more starting power and reserve.
Cars with Auto Start Stop carry a different code such as Q-85. That marks an idle-stop battery, built to restart the engine many times per trip and to accept charge quickly. It shares the D23L footprint, which is exactly why the wrong battery so often ends up in these cars. We bring the idle-stop type when the car has the system.

A Subaru battery through the Dubai year
What the technician checks on a Subaru
- Resting voltage. About 12.6V is healthy, about 12.2V is half charged, under 12.0V is discharged.
- Cranking health against the rating printed on the label, measured with a conductance tester.
- Alternator output with the engine running, lights and AC on. Roughly 13.8 to 14.7V is normal.
- The hold-down bar and hook bolts. A loose battery on a car that goes off-road shakes its plates apart.
- Terminal clamps for white or green corrosion, cleaned before the new battery goes in.
Do not push or tow-start an all-wheel-drive Subaru
An automatic Subaru cannot be push-started, and the all-wheel-drive system does not like being towed with two wheels on the ground. If the battery is flat, the safe options are a jump start or a new battery fitted where the car stands. If it does need recovery, ask for a flatbed.

Subaru: Model by model
- Subaru Forester
- Takes a D23L JIS battery in the 55 to 75 rating band. Many cars from 2019 on have Auto Start Stop and need an idle-stop battery of the Q-85 type, so we check for the button on the dash.
- Subaru XV
- Same engine bay layout as the Impreza it is based on, with a D23L case. Later cars with Auto Start Stop need the idle-stop type; earlier ones run on sealed calcium.
- Subaru Outback
- The 2.5 and 3.6 engines both use a D23L class battery, with the six-cylinder at the higher rating. Roof boxes, fridges and extra lights on touring cars add load worth mentioning to us.
- Subaru Legacy
- The saloon takes the same D23L battery as the Outback of the same year. Access is simple and no registration is needed.
- Subaru Impreza
- A D23L battery at the lower end of the rating band suits the 1.6 and 2.0 engines. Older cars from the 2000s may carry a smaller case, which we confirm from a photo.
- Subaru WRX
- Turbo heat makes the engine bay harder on a battery than in other Subarus. A D23L of 65 or 75 rating is the usual fitment, and modified cars with bigger audio often need the higher one.
- Subaru BRZ
- The rear-drive coupe takes a D23L class JIS battery at the front of the engine bay. It is often a weekend car, so we test for a simple discharge before recommending a new battery.

Subaru: common questions
Not answered here? Ask on WhatsApp. A person replies, at any hour.
What battery does a Subaru Forester take?
A JIS battery in the D23L case, rated between 55 and 75. Foresters with Auto Start Stop, which covers many cars from 2019 on, need an idle-stop battery of the Q-85 type in the same case. Send a photo of the label and we bring the correct one.
Can I fit a bigger battery in my Subaru?
You can go up in rating inside the same case, for example from 55D23L to 75D23L, and that is a sensible upgrade for Dubai heat and extra accessories. A longer case such as D26 only fits if the tray and hold-down bar allow it, which we check on the car.
Does a Subaru need a reset after a battery change?
No registration is needed. If power is lost completely, the one-touch windows need re-teaching and the engine may idle unevenly for a few minutes while the computer relearns. We use a memory saver so the radio, clock and window settings are usually kept.
How long does a Subaru battery last in the UAE?
About 2 to 3 years is typical. The battery sits at the front of the engine bay, where it takes heat from the radiator and the road. Cars that do mostly short trips with the AC on tend towards the shorter end, and a yearly test before summer catches most failures.
