A Peugeot does not like having its battery pulled in a hurry. The body computer has to go to sleep first, and it has to wake up in the right order afterwards. The disconnect routine a Peugeot expects
This follows the order given in Peugeot handbooks. It adds a few minutes and saves a list of faults.

Switch off and wait
Ignition off, doors and windows closed, then a few minutes of waiting so the body computer shuts down before any lead is touched.

Release the terminals
Negative first. On many models the positive uses a lever clamp that lifts without tools. The charge sensor stays on its lead.

Fit the same technology
EFB for EFB, AGM for AGM, in the case length the tray is made for. The cover and the clamp go back.

Reconnect and pause
Positive first, then negative. We wait about a minute before switching the ignition on, so the electronics start in order.

Re-initialise
One-touch windows and the sunroof are taught their end stops again, date and time are set, and the car is scanned for stored faults.
Why Stop and Start stays off for a while
Owners often call back the same evening to say Stop and Start is not working with the new battery. That is expected. The charge sensor on the negative terminal has lost its history and has to measure the battery at rest. Peugeot's own guidance is that the function may only return after the car has stood locked for several hours.
Park the car overnight, locked, and drive it normally the next day. If Stop and Start is still unavailable after two or three days, the cause is usually something else the system checks: cabin temperature demand from the AC, a low engine temperature, or a battery that was the wrong type for the car. Peugeot battery words, explained
- BSI
- The built-in systems interface, Peugeot's body computer. It controls locking, windows, lights and wipers, and it must be asleep before the battery is disconnected.
- Stop and Start
- Switches the engine off when the car is stationary and restarts it when you lift the brake. It only works when the battery is well charged.
- EFB
- Enhanced flooded battery. A strengthened liquid battery made for frequent restarts, used on many Peugeot petrol models.
- Economy mode
- A message shown when the car cuts the radio and other comfort features with the engine off, to save a battery that is running low.
- L2, L3, L4
- DIN case lengths. An L3 is longer than an L2 and will not drop into an L2 tray, whatever the capacity printed on it.
Battery symptoms particular to Peugeot
- Economy mode appears within a minute or two of switching the engine off, and the radio cuts out.
- Stop and Start shows as unavailable on every trip, including long runs on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road.
- A battery charge or electrical fault message appears on start and disappears once the engine is running.
- The digital instrument panel flickers or restarts while the starter is turning.
- Central locking works from the key only at very close range after the car has stood for a few days.
Peugeot: Model by model
- Peugeot 3008
- The current generation runs Stop and Start and usually carries an EFB of about 70Ah, with AGM on some engines. A charge sensor sits on the negative terminal and needs a rest period after the swap.
- Peugeot 5008
- Same electrical layout as the 3008 with seven seats and more cabin load. Most take a 70Ah class EFB or AGM. We match the technology printed on the fitted battery.
- Peugeot 2008
- A smaller case than the 3008, usually around 60Ah. Cars with Stop and Start need EFB. The battery is under a cover on the left of the engine bay.
- Peugeot 208
- The smallest battery in the current range, about 50 to 60Ah. Space around it is tight, so the correct case height matters as much as the capacity.
- Peugeot 508
- The saloon carries the largest car battery in the range, usually a 70 to 80Ah EFB or AGM, feeding a full digital cockpit. Like-for-like replacement only.
- Peugeot 301
- A simple saloon without Stop and Start on most cars. It takes a sealed calcium DIN battery of roughly 50 to 60Ah and needs no rest period or reset beyond the clock.
- Peugeot Partner
- The van takes a DIN battery of about 60 to 70Ah. Delivery use with many short stops is hard on it, so we always check alternator output before blaming the battery.

What battery does a Peugeot 3008 take?
Most current 3008 cars take an EFB of about 70Ah in a DIN L3 case, and some engines are built with AGM. The type is printed on the fitted battery. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we bring the same technology and case size.
Why is Stop and Start not working after my Peugeot battery change?
The charge sensor has to relearn the new battery, and it does that with the car at rest. Leave the car locked for several hours, ideally overnight, then drive normally. The function usually returns by itself within a day or two.
Does a Peugeot need battery coding?
A like-for-like battery does not normally need coding. What the car does need is the correct disconnect order, a rest period for the charge sensor, and re-initialised windows. We also scan the car afterwards, which is why we list registration as recommended on Stop and Start models.
Can I put a normal battery in a Peugeot with Stop and Start?
It will start the engine, but it is the wrong part. An ordinary flooded battery is not made for dozens of restarts a day. Stop and Start will drop out and the battery will fail early. The car should get the technology it was built with, EFB or AGM.
