The short answer
A Volkswagen takes a DIN-size 12V battery, under the bonnet on the Golf, Jetta, Tiguan, Passat and Teramont and under the driver's seat on the Touareg. Cars with start-stop need EFB or AGM of about 60 to 95Ah, and the new battery should be coded. Arjan Battery does both at your door in Arjan and anywhere in Dubai.
Volkswagen sells two kinds of car in the UAE as far as batteries go. A basic Jetta or Polo has a plain battery and nothing to code. A Golf GTI, Tiguan or Touareg has start-stop, a battery sensor and an AGM or EFB that the car needs to be told about. Knowing which one you drive decides the whole job.

Which Volkswagen battery setup do you have
Start-stop changed what a VW battery has to do
On a start-stop Volkswagen the alternator does not charge steadily. It charges hard when you brake and backs off when you accelerate, to save fuel. A module on the negative terminal reports battery charge, temperature and age to the car, which then decides whether to allow the next engine stop. That only works when the car knows which battery it has.
So after a car battery replacement in Arjan on a Golf GTI or Tiguan, we adapt the new battery in the car's gateway with a scan tool: capacity, technology and manufacturer. On a Jetta with no start-stop and no sensor there is nothing to adapt, and we do not pretend otherwise. The technician checks which system the car has before starting.
Normal things a Volkswagen does after a battery change
None of these mean something was damaged. We go through them with you before leaving.
- Steering or stability lights may stay on until the wheel is turned fully left and right and the car is driven a short distance.
- One-touch windows can lose their setting. Holding each switch up for a few seconds after the glass closes restores it.
- Start-stop may stay inactive for a day or two while the car measures the new battery's charge.
- The clock and trip data reset if the battery was fully flat before we arrived. The memory saver prevents this in most other cases.
How we replace a Volkswagen battery on site
- 1
Confirm the car
Model, year, engine and a photo of the battery label on WhatsApp. The price is confirmed before the van leaves.
- 2
Test battery and alternator
We measure resting voltage, cranking health and charging output. If the battery passes, we look for the real fault with you.
- 3
Swap and refit the jacket
The new battery goes in with the hold-down, vent and heat jacket back in place. That jacket matters in a Dubai engine bay.
- 4
Adapt and hand over
The battery is adapted with a scan tool where the car has energy management, faults are cleared and the old battery goes for recycling.
Touareg owners: use the posts under the bonnet
Because the Touareg battery is under the seat, Volkswagen fits jump start terminals in the engine bay. If the car is flat and locked, a jump start service can bring it back from there without touching the interior. Replacing the battery itself means moving the seat, and takes longer than on a Golf.

Volkswagen: Model by model
- Volkswagen Golf
- Battery under the bonnet on the left, wrapped in a fabric heat jacket that must go back on. Start-stop cars take an EFB or AGM of about 60 to 70Ah.
- Volkswagen Golf GTI
- The 2.0 TSI with start-stop usually leaves the factory with an EFB or AGM of 60 to 70Ah. Coding the replacement keeps start-stop and the charging strategy working as designed.
- Volkswagen Tiguan
- Current Tiguans take an AGM or EFB of roughly 70Ah in the engine bay. Earlier cars without start-stop used a conventional battery, so the year matters when ordering.
- Volkswagen Touareg
- The main battery is under the driver's seat, a large AGM of around 95Ah or more. Some V8 and well-equipped older cars add a second battery, so we ask for the VIN.
- Volkswagen Teramont
- The big seven-seater keeps its battery under the bonnet, typically an AGM of 70 to 80Ah on start-stop versions. Rear AC and three rows of electrics work it hard in summer.
- Volkswagen Passat
- Engine-bay battery of about 60 to 70Ah. US-built 2.5 cars often have no start-stop and take an ordinary battery, while later turbo cars need EFB or AGM.
- Volkswagen Jetta
- Among the simplest Volkswagens to change. Many Jettas here take a conventional battery of 44 to 60Ah with no coding, though newer turbo models follow the Golf.
- Volkswagen ID.4
- The electric ID.4 has a 12V battery under the front bonnet that wakes the car and closes its contactors. A weak one produces electrical fault messages on an otherwise healthy car.

Volkswagen: common questions
Not answered here? Ask on WhatsApp. A person replies, at any hour.
What battery does a VW Golf GTI take?
Most Golf GTIs with start-stop take an EFB or AGM battery of about 60 to 70Ah in a DIN case, fitted under the bonnet on the left. We replace it with the same technology and adapt it to the car afterwards. A photo of the label confirms the exact rating.
Does a Volkswagen Tiguan need battery coding?
If it has start-stop, yes. The Tiguan's energy management needs the new battery's capacity and type entered with a scan tool. Without that, start-stop often stays off and charging is not matched to the new battery. Older Tiguans without start-stop do not need it.
Where is the battery in a VW Touareg?
Under the driver's seat, beneath a floor cover. Some older or highly equipped Touaregs also have a second battery in the boot. For a jump start there are terminals under the bonnet. Send us the VIN and we will tell you what your car has before we come.
Why did start-stop stop working on my Volkswagen?
A tired battery is the most common reason. The car blocks start-stop when battery charge or health is too low to guarantee a restart, and in Dubai summer the AC load blocks it as well. A battery test at your car shows whether the battery is the cause.
Can you change a Teramont battery at my building in Arjan?
Yes. The Teramont battery is under the bonnet, so it can be changed in a basement bay. We usually reach Arjan addresses in 20 to 35 minutes, any hour of the day. Fitting and delivery are free with the battery, and the old one is taken for recycling.
